In Catching Thoughts, a girl is plagued by an unwanted thought. No matter what she does–ignore it, yell at it, cry about it–the thought won’t go away. Frustrated and discouraged, she finally looks that bad thought in the face and says, “”Hello.”” At last, she is able to notice other more beautiful, positive thoughts all around her. As she catches hold of new thoughts, the girl discovers she can fill her mind with whatever she chooses.
I am so excited to be apart of the “Catching Thoughts” to share this amazing social and emotional book that is very timely with the world’s current situation. “Catching Thoughts” follows a young girl as she uses mindfulness to dismiss negative thoughts and say hello to positive thoughts instead. The first person narrative allows readers to connect with the girl as she navigates first ignoring the feeling then yelling and finally crying about her unwanted thought. The illustrations by Summer Macon showcase darker colors with negative thoughts and brighter colors with positive thoughts. My favorite part of the story is when the young girl realizes that she has the power to ask the unwanted thought to leave.
COVID 19 has changed many aspects of education making it tough for children to navigate. “Catching Thoughts” is a wonderful tool to help children discuss their feelings and concerns.
I look forward to sharing this book with my students and having conversations about ways that we as a class can have positive mindsets.
